The excessive presence of chloride in concrete is a great potential corrosion of embedded rebars. Even though the chloride quantity present in concrete may be small, chlorides can increase due to the use of creek sand, saline air, seawater, and to the severe exposure conditions. The determination of chloride concentration allows to evaluate the need of repairs on existing structures, and to verify the durability conditions of the materials used in new constructions.

Chloride determination analysis is applied in order to determinate acid-soluble chlorides existing in the concrete. A dust sample of concrete is tested and dissolved in a standard acid solution. The chloride ions react with the acid in an electrochemical reaction. Chloride contamination and corrosion are measured.
